This is such a great episode. I had a family member who died in a similar accident to Rose's dad and every time I watch this story, it makes me wonder what would have happened if she lived.

Yeah the reapers never come back. The logic i use is since the Reapers are more like a common cold thats out of time: they can show up but they don’t have to show up. Also the “Stupid ape” line feels more in line with the expanded universe when compared to classic who. Partly because in various different interpretations 7 and Ace have a falling out and that’s why 7 is alone in the TV movie (this is alluded to in power of the doctor and the recent Tales of the Tardis Minisodes) so the Doctor might hold some resentment from that. And it partly feels in line with Cass from the night of the Doctor, who obviously wasn’t invented back in 2005, but her (understandable) fears of time lords and her human emotions dragged the Doctor into the time war and probably influenced 9s resentment, since him trying to help her literally changed his life, even if that’s retroactive.

I think there was 6 9th doctor novels, 3 with jack in them, 3 before jack came on. then there was the 9th doctor comic which mostly focussed on explaining jack`s 2 missing years.

Paul Cornell is a wonderful writer who started out writing original Doctor Who novels before moving on to being a television writer, Casualty, Coronation Street, etc. He's only written two television stories for Doctor Who, but they're both bangers and I always hold out hope that one day he'll write another one.

Even though this considered one of the top 10 episodes of Dr. Who fandom i consider this my least favouritei was more invested in the time reaper stuff more than the whole Rose and dad stuff. I'm not into the whole soap opera territory.

“That’s not me” might be my favourite scene in the whole episode. Here is Rose pouring out what she honestly and genuinely believes her dead dad would have been, that he would have been that perfect, ideal role model who the world robbed her of before she even knew him, in large part due to the way Jackie eulogises him in death… but that wasn’t the reality. And it’s not Jackie’s fault, she just wants to remember the best parts of Pete to pass them onto Rose but that wasn’t the totality of who he was. Pete wasn’t perfect, he was far from it. A dreamer above a realist, something of a layabout and an adulterer, but he was never delusional. He knew what his flaws were, so hearing Rose describe someone he knows in his heart is not him breaks him. What father doesn’t want to know that his little girl thinks the world of him? It’s what every parent wants, to know that their efforts are appreciated by their child but Pete has to realise in this scene that it’s impossible for him to be this man. He knows he’ll screw up, he knows he’ll fail her, he knows he’ll disappoint her in spite of his best efforts, that’s just who he is. Which then leads into him understanding that the only reason she’s here is because he died and shouldn’t be alive right now. All of it is implied in Shaun Dingwall’s acting and Murray Gold’s score as he slowly understands why Rose has absolutely no idea who he is. Such a powerful scene because having to admit that’s not who you are is the bravest thing you can do, and that’s who he was. Pete might not have always been dependable or reliable but he was brave when it mattered.

This is my favourite episode of season 1 and I recently ranked it the second best story in all of Who. I know people probably won't agree with the second part but I love this. The story is brilliant and the acting is on point, it's next level from the entire cast but especially Billie Piper acting her heart out throughout. The dialogue throughout this episode is superb as well from the Doctor and Rose's "don't touch the baby" but also when Rose describes what Pete was like as a dad and he just responds with "That isn't me" it's so heartbreaking. I also love the conversation with the bride and groom saying they're not important and the Doctor immediately shuts that down and the argument in Pete's flat with an angry 9th Doctor standing infront of a black horse. One of my favourite things about this episode though is how it tries to swerve you, once you see the car reappearing you pretty much know how this story must end, you can't defy fate after all, but they try to make you believe that no, there may be a chance to save him after all just for that bout of hope to ripped from you when the wraith destroys the TARDIs and literally kills the Doctor. I could probably say much, much more and dive deeper into this but I hope this list of favourite moments is enough. I think between this episode and Dalek I really became a die hard Doctor Who fan, like I enjoyed earlier stories of season 1 but these last three were a roundhouse kick that gripped me entirely and left me wanting more. Oh, one more thing I like about this episode is how Pete is so accepting of time travel and quick to realise he should be dead, it's a nice contrast from Jackie and in some way makes Rose's quick acceptance of all this make sense too. She got it from her dad.

If you didn’t notice the mental patient is actually supposed to be Tony Crane. If u rewatch the last episode Crane is actually put into a psyche ward because of what he was saying about Sam. The implication is that Sam affected the timeline and in the future instead of being tortured by Crane for the case against him in 2006 he’s being tortured by Crane who’s been in a psyche ward all these years. He does this because he recognised Sam from the past.

In order to see someone or something else as inferior you must also see yourself as superior, that's the equation and why eugenics was taken up not just by the Nazis but by the US Gov who forcibly sterilised poor uneducated black women without their knowledge. There can never be concept of ending imperfection being good as imperfection allows for free will and change. Indeed we owe our very existence to the imperfections within DNA.

The original working title of this episode was called "The Companion Who Couldn't" it was to test whether Adam was a worthy companion or not and of course it turned out he wasn't. Yes there is a Dr. Who comic book featuring Adam called "Prisoners of Time" which was made for the 50th anniversary of the show it actually takes a dark turn his mother dies an older Adam gets revenge on the Ninth Doctor where he travels through all of the Doctor's timestreams to kidnap all of his companions who ever travelled with him. Bruno Langley who plays Adam is no longer acting since 2017 after he pleaded guilty for sexual assault.

Russell T Davies was born the same year as Doctor Who first premiered on television he said in interviews he remembers all the way back to the First Doctor (William Hartnell)'s regeneration when he was 3 years old and how fascinated he was with the concept of "regeneration" so yes he can remember Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker and so fourth.

If you think the vomit-o-matic is bad, you should see what happens when you have diarrhea.😂 The whole point of Adam is to have a companion who's a bit crap. (I should have thought that out better, with it being right after the diarrhea joke). And see how the Doctor reacts to that. And as you demonstrated in your reaction, Adam's suckiness makes companions like Adric seem better by comparison.

This episode isn't seen as very good but I love it, the social commentary throughout the episode is top notch and unfortunately ever relevant. I think this was written as a partial response to the media post-9/11 leading to the Iraq war but it can be used for any propaganda campaign that occurs. It's sad how many times over the years I've had conversations with people that mirror the conversation between Kathica and the Doctor on why there are no aliens, especially during the Brexit referendum, so many peple had no clue what they actually believed or why and just simple basic questions would see them crumble and then get angry/dismissive at me. I first watched this when I was like 10 and it was pretty much the final nail in the coffin when it comes to blindly trusting the media and authority (9/11 and the Iraq war had me at like 7 years old questioning things already). The quote from this episode that will stick with me forever is "Create a climate of fear and it's easy to keep the borders closed. It's just a matter of emphasis. The right word in the right broadcast repeated often enough can destabilise an economy, invent an enemy, change a vote" I can't wait to see next weeks reaction :D

Adam was specifically designed to demonstrate that not everyone was cut out to be a companion. Only the bravest and kindest will do. Presumably, this ethos of the Doctor's was strengthened by his involvement in the Time War.

For the record I want to say that this video is in my subscription box. I will be fully transparent in saying I discovered this channel through your dad’s reactions to classic who and I only watch this channel for Who reactions, so I’m definitely not the best viewer you could have to boost your non who content in the algorithm. But all of your content is appearing in my box. Anyway this episode definitely isn’t my favourite by any means but it’s one of the most important in the entirety of the show. Illustrating to new viewers why everyone can’t travel with the Doctor. I think a spiritual remake of this episode with different characters and concepts but retaining the core idea of a flawed companion getting tempted and breaking the doctors rules should be a must for every era of the show and I’m disappointed that the show doesn’t revisit this episode concept.
